Ugly Betty: One Book to rule them all

It looks like "Wilhelmina hatches a plan to take over the magazine" is going to be a recurring theme, so here's this week's plan: she attempts to gain control of The Book, a mock-up of the next issue of the magazine that is imbued with special powers, for the one who controls The Book controls the magazine. It is, in fact, the One Book. It gets away from the Bookbearer, Betty, and into the hands of Bookwraith Marc, but all is made right in the end. We also get a bit more of the subplot involving the non-dead former editor (run to her non-death by animal rights activists - nice job, Liz), as Bradford steals an incriminating music box from her things and Fey herself calls up Daniel to get all sinister about his dad's secrets. It's over the top, yes, but it's kind of delightfully over the top, just like the telenovela scenes that are sprinkled in. Well, not just like the telenovela scenes, because so far no priests have gotten slapped in the middle of a makeout session.

As yet, there are very few characters I don't like. I wish we could get more about Daniel, though. There's just not much to him yet, although he and Betty are developing a very nice partnership. Betty has the fresh ideas, and Daniel has the knowledge of how the world works. And it's great to watch them team up against the machinations of Wilhelmina and Marc. I have high hopes for their partnership becoming one of the most appealing aspects of the show, once Daniel gets interesting.

Speaking of Wilhelmina and Marc, they get the best exchange of the night. Wilhelmina: "How was Queens?" Marc: "Like the Lost City of Hoochieville." Evil is so snarky.

I, too, am enjoying the evil subplot - it adds another dimension. The more evil people the better! They're the most fun. So far Daniel is boring, but Marc & Wilhemina are a riot.
